A hydraulic motor powers an oscillating cam connecting two cutting blades. Varying the hydraulic flow changes the speed of the blades. 2 inch opposing sickle sections allows the cutter to cut material up to 1 1/2″ inches in diameter.  (Dependent upon the hardness of the material being cut and pressure provided by the tractor). The 38- in cutter only requires 3 to 4.5 gal/min. hydraulic flow and can be adjusted to cut vertically, horizontally, or at any angle in between with our Deluxe EZ Mount Bracket. This bracket will also allow the trimmer to be positioned upto 40 degrees below grade for trimming around ponds or along ditch embankments. (Please note hydraulic hoses or fittings are not included. #10 ORB Male fittings will be required with hoses).

The Samurai is virtually maintenance free with sealed bearings and a self-lubricating motor. Sickles are easily replaced as they are fastened with capscrews, not rivets.

The Samurai was developed in conjunction with the Canadian Research Council’s Industrial Technology Centre and tested by the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute.

FAQs

What is the Weight of Unit?

70 Lbs. – Packaged Dimensions 12″ x 48″ x 12″

What is the Cutting Length?

38″ – 19 x 2″ sections on one stationary knife, and 19 x 2” on one moving knife

Do I need the mounting bracket to operate the Sabre?

Yes. The mounting bracket is required to properly attach the unit to a bucket and allow the Sabre to be positioned in different configurations.

What position can the Sabre operate?

The unit can be adjusted to cut in a vertical, horizontal, or any angle in between. The universal mounting bracket allows for a full 110 degree positioning angle.

What size of material can the Sabre cut?

The unit is comprised of two sections of sickles, which have just under a two-inch stroke enabling the unit capable of cutting material up to 1 1/2” in diameter. Because the Sabre cuts material from both sides, it leaves a nice clean cut.

How many GPM does the Sabre require to operate?

This unit only requires 3.3 GPM at 200-psi max to operate properly.

Where do I connect the hydraulics?

To an auxiliary hydraulic port on your tractor, loader or skid steer. If no auxiliary hydraulic port is available, then you can tap into the hydraulic pitch port on the bucket.

What is the cutting speed of the Sabre?

Optimum cutting speed of the unit is 80 – 100 RPM. You can count the moving sections by eye. If you cannot, the unit is operating too fast.

Can I use the Sabre as a sickle mower?

Yes. The unit can be positioned in this fashion. Many users utilize the Sabre to maintain growth underneath electrical fence lines.

How do I lubricate the Sabre?

All contact surfaces are greased when manufactured and should be inspected and greased regularly.

How long has the Sabre SAMURAI been in service?

The unit has been in service since 1983..

Are the sections a standard size?

No. They are 2″ sickle sections manufactured in Austria to the specifications of the Sabre. They are bolted on and not riveted making replacement simple and easy.

Are the sections smooth or serrated?

Serrated. We found that serrated sections “bite” the material better.

How does it compare to other cutters on the market?

As far as we are aware there are no other cutters on the market that compare to the Sabre for it’s versatility, cutting capacity, low operating requirements and ease of use.

What is the make and model number of the hydraulic motor?

We use the following:
Charlyn (H) Series – #101-1001
Or Dan Foss – #151-2121
Or Ross – #MK021310AAAB
The motors are interchangeable mount and capacity but if parts are required you should specify the make and the model to obtain the correct parts from any hydraulic repair depot.

Are hydraulic hoses supplied?

No. Due to the numerous different models of tractors, loaders and skid steers, it would be impossible to completely satisfy every customer with a standard length of hose.

Is there a longer version of the Sabre available?

We have found that 38 inch cutting bar is an optimum length to allow for easy manoeuvrability when used in either a vertical or horizontal position. If needed, some users will extend the 2” x 2” square tubing on the mounting bracket to enable the unit to have a longer reach.

I absolutely love this saw! What used to take me around 5 weekends of back breaking work was reduced to around 4 hours and no hard labor involved!! The deluxe bracket clamped to the side of the bucket works, but I didn't really like the two bolts jammed into the side of the bucket. Didn't work well for me. I ended up using a SSQA 3 point attachment plate to make a different mount. I have modified the mount to be more flexible and controlled from the seat, without tools. I used linear actuators to move the saw, since the Massey has limited hydraulic flow. Also, this was cheaper and lighter than hydraulics. I'm sure the mount will get modified in the future. I was looking for cheap and easy with the mount so that I could put it to work. Going to take a little more configuring for the final product. Current mount can move 30" out, 30" up, and rotate the saw from around -40 degrees to 90 degrees by using a wireless remote control. I did have to add a 12 volt wire from the tractor to the wireless controller, but it can disconnect at the same location my hydraulics disconnect for the 3rd function. I did use the deluxe bracket in my mount, and I modified it in a way that I can still use just clamped to a bucket. Honestly, it may be easier to just buy another bracket and move the saw.

I've been impressed with the Samurai, so far.

Problems, not a standard blade, so replacement has to be ordered. The end blade has been knocked off twice.

Finally I have used the Samurai enough to provide a constructive review. The bucket mount did not work well for me as the JD bucket was too flimsy. Instead of reinforcing the bucket, I opted to build a rack for the loader to mount the samurai. I have a diverter valve, but opted for hydraulic hoses from the rear remotes for ease of operation. Was able to clear over hanging branches from my snowshoe trails up to about 12 ft. I put my 4 ft bush hog on the tractor and it grinds up the branches as I go. Very happy with how it works. Very economical compared to other options.

Just received the Samurai. First blade arrived damaged. The Cutthat people were very responsive and helpful in getting a second blade out to me. The support was great, they were easy to get a hold of and were very concerned about meeting my needs. The time it took from ordering to home, with the damage hiccup, was ~2 months. The first blade arrived in 6weeks.

The Sabre is heavy and can be awkward for one person to mount particularly if it is mounted to the bracket prior to mounting on the bucket. Recommend mounting the bracket first then attach the blade. It takes a little time attaching everything to the bucket. The bracket is attached to the bucket with two bolts that need constant tightening. Vibration from the Sabre causes the bracket to shift and loosen. Be watchful. I recommend getting hyd quick disconnects on each end of the hoses so that the hoses can be removed when adding or removing the Sabre. Helps lighten the load as well getting the hoses out of the way when carrying the Sabre.

I have a Kubota MX5400. I use 2nd gear slow so I can run the rpm’s up while moving at a somewhat steady pace. Light branches are no problem but when you get into the 3/4 to 1” size the cut is not so easy and requires stopping, backing and re-attacking to get the cut. Still working with the Sabre to find the sweet spot for speed and cut. Consider the density of the foliage you plan to use this on before buying. 1” Autumn Olive branches are a challenge for the Sabre. Larger tractors might have an easier go at it.

Overall: it’s a well built product that could use some upgrades (beef up how the bracket mounts to the bucket and design a quick attach for the blade mounting to the bracket instead of 2 bolts). Constantly getting out of the cab to retighten the mounting bolts can be a pain.

My Sabre Samurai cutter mounted on Kubota BX-25D bucket. I decided to install a 3rd function kit, as it allows me to retain full lift and tilt while cutting. This enables me to cut down to ground level without flipping the unit upside down. My tractor bucket sides are pretty thin; I recommend adding a 1/2" piece of flat steel as a backer plate. And, check out those counter weights!

I was looking for an option to maintain my walking trails at my property and also my parents property. I looked into the new style hydraulic sickle bars but they are mounted on the 3-point hitch and would cut after you push threw the brush. I specifically wanted something that would mount on the front and cut as you are going in. I also wanted to articulate from ground to at least nine feet up. The Samurai Cutter is exactly what I needed. Not only will it edge the trails but it will cut under the electric fence around the garden, cut the ditches, and even low hanging limbs in the yard. I have a sub compact tractor and it has no problem running the cutter. For now i made up two 8' hoses and plug into the curl function of the loader, until I add remotes. As pictured I have the cutter on the loader and the brush hog on the back. I trim the limbs then mulch them up with the brush hog. Great product. And Grant is very good at answering any questions.

The cutter works great. Using it on a John Deere 1025R subcompact tractor, with power coming from the tilt function ports of the front bucket.  Mainly cutting vertically so far, to keep my hiking trails clear. If you plan to use it on a subcompact tractor, I suggest running the throttle near full power, to get optimum cutting speed.

Great idea, great product! I’m very happy with my Sabre Samurai. My situation may be a little different than most, I purchased the Samurai to stay on top of a couple of residential properties that have a lot of vines/briars/bushes/small trees growing mostly around the perimeters. It’s been great for for keeping smaller stuff like that trimmed back, and unlike those rotary cutters it leaves a nice clean cut and looks the way I want things to look around my yards. The only problem I had was I was installing and removing it a lot doing other projects with my bucket/forks etc. It’s probably not an issue for most people but I have a ruptured disc in my back and just realized that I didn’t want to be doing that all the time. As a result bought a blank quick attach frame and built my own mount with aome 2” tubing that’s adjustable side to side so I can quickly switch back and forth between attachments without having to physically lift anything. With that and all the adjustability in the Samurai mount I can quickly put it in a ton of different positions with ease, really enjoying it. I’m honestly kind of disappointed that winter is upon us and I won’t have any reason to crank up the tractor and use it for a few months, haha!

I have had my Sabre Samurai installed for two weeks now.

I wanted to give a fair review by putting it to work before commenting.

    I LOVE IT!

I can now mow the sides of my pond banks, and even better, now SIDE TRIM my logging and ATV trails!

I highly recommend the deluxe bracket as it is worth every penny!

One tip I can offer is that when mounted on the side of the bucket loader the front can feel "tippy" when raised up and side trimming trees.

So I added some weight to the opposite side of my loader bucket and it helps A LOT!

Customer service is FANTASTIC! Thanks Grant!

And my cutter was delivered in two weeks!

For hedging along roadways and trimming through heavy brush the Samurai has no peer. I first mounted the Samurai on a Hitachi 17 U mini excavator and had the versatility of a very long reach, both horizontally and vertically.

Just for giggles I mounted the Samurai on a Struck mini dozer, powered by a 20hp Honda motor. The Samurai performed perfectly, although the mini dozer bucket lift height did limit the amount of vertical height I could obtain, though no fault of the Samurai.

I live in Hilo Hawaii, the rainiest town in the USA. I've seen over 165” of rain so far this year and the Samurai is holding up very well in severely wet conditions.
