FAQs

What is the Weight of Unit?

70 Lbs. – Packaged Dimensions 12″ x 48″ x 12″

What is the Cutting Length?

38″ – 19 x 2″ sections on one stationary knife, and 19 x 2” on one moving knife

Do I need the mounting bracket to operate the Sabre?

Yes. The mounting bracket is required to properly attach the unit to a bucket and allow the Sabre to be positioned in different configurations.

What position can the Sabre operate?

The unit can be adjusted to cut in a vertical, horizontal, or any angle in between. The universal mounting bracket allows for a full 110 degree positioning angle.

What size of material can the Sabre cut?

The unit is comprised of two sections of sickles, which have just under a two-inch stroke enabling the unit capable of cutting material up to 1 1/2” in diameter. Because the Sabre cuts material from both sides, it leaves a nice clean cut.

How many GPM does the Sabre require to operate?

This unit only requires 3.3 GPM at 200-psi max to operate properly.

Where do I connect the hydraulics?

To an auxiliary hydraulic port on your tractor, loader or skid steer. If no auxiliary hydraulic port is available, then you can tap into the hydraulic pitch port on the bucket.

What is the cutting speed of the Sabre?

Optimum cutting speed of the unit is 80 – 100 RPM. You can count the moving sections by eye. If you cannot, the unit is operating too fast.

Can I use the Sabre as a sickle mower?

Yes. The unit can be positioned in this fashion. Many users utilize the Sabre to maintain growth underneath electrical fence lines.

How do I lubricate the Sabre?

All contact surfaces are greased when manufactured and should be inspected and greased regularly.

How long has the Sabre SAMURAI been in service?

The unit has been in service since 1983..

Are the sections a standard size?

No. They are 2″ sickle sections manufactured in Austria to the specifications of the Sabre. They are bolted on and not riveted making replacement simple and easy.

Are the sections smooth or serrated?

Serrated. We found that serrated sections “bite” the material better.

How does it compare to other cutters on the market?

As far as we are aware there are no other cutters on the market that compare to the Sabre for it’s versatility, cutting capacity, low operating requirements and ease of use.

What is the make and model number of the hydraulic motor?

We use the following:
Charlyn (H) Series – #101-1001
Or Dan Foss – #151-2121
Or Ross – #MK021310AAAB
The motors are interchangeable mount and capacity but if parts are required you should specify the make and the model to obtain the correct parts from any hydraulic repair depot.

Are hydraulic hoses supplied?

No. Due to the numerous different models of tractors, loaders and skid steers, it would be impossible to completely satisfy every customer with a standard length of hose.

Is there a longer version of the Sabre available?

We have found that 38 inch cutting bar is an optimum length to allow for easy manoeuvrability when used in either a vertical or horizontal position. If needed, some users will extend the 2” x 2” square tubing on the mounting bracket to enable the unit to have a longer reach.

How much time it saved me by using the Samurai ? It usually took my employee and I about 2 1/2 weeks to prune my bushes using a hand held commercial gas trimmer. Using the Samurai cut down the time required to only two days. The biggest benefit from using it however is the clean cut of the blueberry canes. Most products on the market tear the canes and leave it more susceptible to disease infiltration. A cleaner cut helps limit the spread of disease.

Just had the unit hosed and flow controller set up. Cuts very nice, gives a great finish. When its not hammering down with rain, and when i have learnt best how to use the Sabre, Ill grab some footage and good quality images for you with it at work. None the less, really very very happy with the product within 10 minutes of use.

I purchased my Samurai about a month ago for use trimming grape vines in our 2 1/2 acre vineyard and it saves an absolute ton of time over trimming by hand. It does not replace trimming by hand but for doing the bulk of the work in a timely manner it cannot be beat.
Simple to hook up and operate, robust and extremely helpful customer service, when required, and you have a product that has to be one of the best on the market. The versatile EZ attachment bracket is an added bonus.
Did I mention that it comes for a great price and quick delivery also.

I use my Samurai to trim back the brush on about 2 miles of woodland trails and it saves me a lot of time with what was manual labor before the Samurai!!

Some things that I have learned that may help you:
-When cutting in thick grass and brush I tilt the blade with the front edge up to shed the cut material from plugging the cutter. Test different angles to see what works best for you.
-Cutting the overhead brush back with the Samurai raised and angled slightly over keeps my trails open to sunlight encouraging my clover to grow and help dry out my trails.
-Make a guard for the blade with a heavy piece of folded cardboard and a wrap of duct tape that aids in handling.
-I am running this on a 23 hp compact tractor hosed in to the backhoe connections and added a flow control valve. Be sure to color match the hydraulic hose end quick couplers with colored wire ties for a speedy hook-up!
-Get the improved mounting bracket but recognize the added bulkiness – It may be a two step install – bracket then add the Samurai for an old guy like me!
-I have best performance cutting in the spring before the grass gets too heavy – I still do a lot in the summer with heavy grass just go slower and use the bucket hydraulics to dump the grass occasionally.

Thank you for your recent review of the Samurai. It’s great to hear the Samurai is being put to use out east in New Brunswick. We hope you can retire your brush saw to the shed for a long time.

  6. Scott Metheny

I purchased the samurai to maintain the logging roads on a 200 acre piece of property I recently bought. The property was clear cut about 8 years ago and the roads are being overrun by briars and small trees on the sides. The samurai allowed me to stay on the road and cut back the growth on the sides without worrying about hitting a sump. The staff at cutthat.com were very helpful un answering my questions before and after the purchase. I highly recommend this product and the customer service of this company.

Bought mine this spring and have used it everyday cleaning lease roads and brush. Mounted on 2025 John Deere and works 8 to 10 hours a day and real like the unit I would and have recommended it to others, Great product. Compared with other sickle units my friends have and they like the Samurai better and for less money.
