Ask our industry first tractor compatibility system if your tractor can operate the Sabre Samurai Cutter. Provide the tractor brand and model for the most accurate answer.
This guide shows you how to install the Samurai cutter safely and correctly, Follow the steps to ensure a secure fit and optimal performance.
Allows the cutter to drop 40° below horizontal—ideal for cutting ponds, ditch embankments, and other hard-to-reach areas with ease.
Spring-loaded breakaway feature snaps the knife back when excessive pressure is applied, protecting it from hidden obstacles and heavy material.
Angle your Samurai from vertical to horizontal—or any angle in between. Our pin-hole bracket system lets you lock the knife at the exact angle you need for any job.
Easily adjust the breakaway feature to control how easily your breakaway feature activates.
Samurai cutter: 80LBS with the hydraulic motor installed.
Deluxe mounting bracket: 40LBS when assembled.
38″ – 19 x 2″ sections on one stationary knife, and 19 x 2” on one moving knife
The unit is comprised of two sections of sickles, which have just under a two-inch stroke enabling the unit capable of cutting material up to 1 1/2” in diameter. Because the Sabre cuts material from both sides, it leaves a nice clean cut.
Optimum cutting speed of the unit is 80 – 100 RPM. You can count the moving sections by eye. If you cannot, the unit is operating too fast.
The Samurai requires a minimum of 3.5GPM (gallons per minute) to a maximum of 5GPM, and max 2,000PSI, to operate effectively.
We use the following:
The motors are interchangeable mount and capacity but if parts are required you should specify the make and the model to obtain the correct parts from any hydraulic repair depot.
No — The sickle sections on the Samurai are custom-made to fit the Samurai. If you need replacements, you need to order them directly from us.
Serrated. We found that serrated sections “bite” the material better.
We have found that 38 inch cutting bar is an optimum length to allow for easy maneuverability when used in either a vertical or horizontal position.
If needed, some users will extend the 2” x 2” square tubing on the mounting bracket to enable the unit to have a longer reach.
As far as we are aware there are no other cutters on the market that compare to the Sabre for its versatility, cutting capacity, low operating requirements and ease of use.
The unit has been in service since 1983.
The Samurai can cut grass that has a stalk to it. If you want to cut thin grass, like lawn grass, it will be too thin for the blades and likely bend over. Thicker grass around ponds for example, will get cut effortlessly.
Yes — the Samurai can get anything up to 1-½” with sufficient hydraulic flow and pressure.
Yes. The mounting bracket is required to properly attach the unit to a bucket and allow the Sabre to be positioned in different configurations.
The unit can be adjusted to cut in vertical, horizontal, or any angle in between. The universal mounting bracket supports a full 130° positioning angle.
You can connect the hydraulic lines to a third function valve. If you do not have a third function valve, you can connect them to the rear hydraulic auxiliary ports or your bucket tilt hydraulics. You can do this by disconnecting the hydraulic lines that control the tilt function of your bucket and connecting the hydraulic lines for the Samurai to the ports.
Yes. The unit can be positioned in this fashion. Many users utilize the Sabre to maintain growth underneath electrical fence lines.
You would only need a flow control valve if your tractor has a pump flow over 15GPM (gallons per minute). If your tractor produces less than this, you can manage the hydraulic flow to the required maximum of 5GPM with your engine RPMs. Ex. If your tractor produces 10 GPM, you would run it at half engine RPMs.
This is a flow control valve we recommend. With it, you would need four ½” hydraulic hoses.

Yes — The bracket has a spring-activated breakaway feature; the tension can be adjusted to change the ease of the breakaway.
Yes — However, you would need to install a flow control valve on the hydraulic hoses, which is to manage the hydraulic GPM, as most skid steers and excavators will exceed the maximum flow rate.
No. Due to the numerous different models of tractors, loaders and skid steers, it would be impossible to completely satisfy every customer with a standard length of hose.
No — We do not sell any hydraulic accessories for the Samurai cutter.
All contact surfaces are greased when manufactured and should be inspected and greased regularly.
Parts can be ordered directly from our website or by giving us a phone call.

I work with a friends group for the Virginia State Parks and trail maintenance is one of the tasks we are constantly challenged with. With over 100 miles of combined use trails in one park alone one can imagine the task of keeping all the face slappers free from our trails for all of its users, horse, hiking, biking, running and fire roads. Historically this has been a very labor intensive task for many people with loppers , pole saws, trimmers ,saws , safety gear, helmets , glasses and a lot of sweat equity. This morning I bush hogged about 10 miles of trails and had the samurai cutter mounted on the front bucket of a 65 hp John Deere. As the trimmings fell to the road the rear mounted bush hog made sawdust of them. Three hours and one man later not only was the trail mowed but much of the face slapping branches were eliminated. A little care , close attention and a slower gear were all that was necessary to perform a nicely manicured trail. I’ve also run this on a 25 hp Kubota tractor with equal results. While using on a smaller tractor a counter balance is wise on the rear for added stability and safety.
Respectfully , Dick
