I wanted to let you know that I am very happy with my new Sabre Samurai cutter. I bought it mainly to use as a vertical brushcutter to clear about 8km of trails and roads on our property in rural Ontario and have also trimmed shoulders and ditches. It excels at cutting back the brush and limbs that reach into the open spaces and because of being mounted on the leading edge of a 7 foot bucket on my tractor's loader, can reach nearly as high as my pole saw, saving my arms and shoulders a gruelling amount of work. I ran lines from my rear hydraulics and put short lines on the motor to make it easy to install and remove. It also means that I only have to run the cutter while actually cutting and can use the foot throttle to speed up between areas the require clearing. It's taken some getting used to but I can now confirm that it will cut the advertised 1.5 inch material while moving at slow speeds. In my video, you can see where I actually stop for a second or two and then there is a bang when the large brunch is severed.

A happy customer,

I’m very impress with my new sickle mower, I covered a lot of food plots and trails cutting overhanging branches. I just made one small modification to my unit when cutting with the blade in a straight up position when the break away goes back the hydraulic fittings on the hoses would hit on the inside of my bucket but that was minor for the time this unit saves you is unbelievable. I have people when I stop for fuel at fuel stations that walks over to look and see what I have set up on my bucket it’s definitely and attraction to an out doors man . It normally would take 6 weekends to cut what I cut in one weekend.

The cutter works great. Using it on a John Deere 1025R subcompact tractor, with power coming from the tilt function ports of the front bucket.  Mainly cutting vertically so far, to keep my hiking trails clear. If you plan to use it on a subcompact tractor, I suggest running the throttle near full power, to get optimum cutting speed.

For hedging along roadways and trimming through heavy brush the Samurai has no peer. I first mounted the Samurai on a Hitachi 17 U mini excavator and had the versatility of a very long reach, both horizontally and vertically.

Just for giggles I mounted the Samurai on a Struck mini dozer, powered by a 20hp Honda motor. The Samurai performed perfectly, although the mini dozer bucket lift height did limit the amount of vertical height I could obtain, though no fault of the Samurai.

I live in Hilo Hawaii, the rainiest town in the USA. I've seen over 165” of rain so far this year and the Samurai is holding up very well in severely wet conditions. The unit was shipped very well packaged, in a timely manner, and product support has been great. I’m very pleased with the Samurai.

Ensure your tractor’s front-end loader is equipped with a Skid Steer Quick Attach (SSQA) system. SSQA is identified by a distinctive two-lever locking mechanism located at the top corners of the loader arms.

Popular tractor brands that commonly use SSQA include:

  • Kubota
  • New Holland
  • Case IH
  • Kioti
  • Mahindra
  • Bobcat
  • Yanmar

Angle your Samurai from vertical to horizontal—or any angle in between. Our pin-hole bracket system lets you lock the knife at the exact angle you need for any job.

Offset your Samurai up to 20″ from your tractor for more clearance.

Spring-loaded breakaway feature snaps the knife back when excessive pressure is applied, protecting it from hidden obstacles and heavy material.

Mount suitcase weights to counter the knife’s weight for better tractor balance.

Easily connect, disconnect, and store your quick attach plate.

Samurai cutter: 80LBS with the hydraulic motor installed.

Deluxe mounting bracket: 40LBS when assembled.

38″ – 19 x 2″ sections on one stationary knife, and 19 x 2” on one moving knife

The unit is comprised of two sections of sickles, which have just under a two-inch stroke enabling the unit capable of cutting material up to 1 1/2” in diameter. Because the Sabre cuts material from both sides, it leaves a nice clean cut.

Optimum cutting speed of the unit is 80 – 100 RPM. You can count the moving sections by eye. If you cannot, the unit is operating too fast.

The Samurai requires a minimum of 3.5GPM (gallons per minute) to a maximum of 5GPM, and max 2,000PSI, to operate effectively.

We use the following:

  • Charlyn (H) Series – #101-1001
  • Or Dan Foss – #151-2121
  • Or Ross – #MK021310AAAB

The motors are interchangeable mount and capacity but if parts are required you should specify the make and the model to obtain the correct parts from any hydraulic repair depot.

No — The sickle sections on the Samurai are custom-made to fit the Samurai. If you need replacements, you need to order them directly from us.

Serrated. We found that serrated sections “bite” the material better.

We have found that 38 inch cutting bar is an optimum length to allow for easy maneuverability when used in either a vertical or horizontal position.

If needed, some users will extend the 2” x 2” square tubing on the mounting bracket to enable the unit to have a longer reach.

As far as we are aware there are no other cutters on the market that compare to the Sabre for its versatility, cutting capacity, low operating requirements and ease of use.

The unit has been in service since 1983.

The Samurai can cut grass that has a stalk to it. If you want to cut thin grass, like lawn grass, it will be too thin for the blades and likely bend over. Thicker grass around ponds for example, will get cut effortlessly.

Yes — the Samurai can get anything up to 1-½” with sufficient hydraulic flow and pressure.

Yes. The mounting bracket is required to properly attach the unit to a bucket and allow the Sabre to be positioned in different configurations.

The unit can be adjusted to cut in vertical, horizontal, or any angle in between. The universal mounting bracket supports a full 130° positioning angle.

You can connect the hydraulic lines to a third function valve. If you do not have a third function valve, you can connect them to the rear hydraulic auxiliary ports or your bucket tilt hydraulics. You can do this by disconnecting the hydraulic lines that control the tilt function of your bucket and connecting the hydraulic lines for the Samurai to the ports.

Yes. The unit can be positioned in this fashion. Many users utilize the Sabre to maintain growth underneath electrical fence lines.

You would only need a flow control valve if your tractor has a pump flow over 15GPM (gallons per minute). If your tractor produces less than this, you can manage the hydraulic flow to the required maximum of 5GPM with your engine RPMs. Ex. If your tractor produces 10 GPM, you would run it at half engine RPMs.

This is a flow control valve we recommend. With it, you would need four ½” hydraulic hoses.

flow control picture diagram v1
This is a diagram of the flow control valve set up for reference.

Yes — The bracket has a spring-activated breakaway feature; the tension can be adjusted to change the ease of the breakaway.

Yes — However, you would need to install a flow control valve on the hydraulic hoses, which is to manage the hydraulic GPM, as most skid steers and excavators will exceed the maximum flow rate.

No. Due to the numerous different models of tractors, loaders and skid steers, it would be impossible to completely satisfy every customer with a standard length of hose.

No — We do not sell any hydraulic accessories for the Samurai cutter.

All contact surfaces are greased when manufactured and should be inspected and greased regularly.

Parts can be ordered directly from our website or by giving us a phone call.

I broke down and purchased one of the Sabre Samurai cutters. Best investment I ever made, no pole saw again. I installed a hydraulic control valve, with detents, if cutter gets hung up on real large limb, you can cycle the control valve and you are on your way. I have trimmed around ponds and top trees under a power line.

I bought the sickle (I believe) in 2007. I don't think it had been on the market very long. I had purchased some property in the upstate of South Carolina and bought it to trim low hanging branches and trim hedges with my tractor. I have used it to trim back branches along a mile and half private road. I have also used it to trim the roadside vegetation. I have tried to maintain the sickle to the best of my ability. It has been a wonderful tool for me to use and has really held up well. I was realistic going into the purchase on what I thought the sickle could handle and when talking to your salesman he also thought it would work well for what I had planned. I haven't tried to cut down or trim anything that was beyond the sickles capabilities and like I stated earlier it has work very well for me. Thank you again for manufacturing such a great product.

All the best. J.R. Donachie

I love mine! I use it on a JD 3038e. I wish I had a better switch for it, as I use the grapple open/close switch to operate. With a rubber band, though - I can have it running for a good while, trimming trails on our hunting lease or keeping my driveway passable. An excellent product, start to finish.
